Envirothon
The Envirothon consists of five outdoor learning stations including soils, wildlife, water resources, forestry and current environmental issues. Teams include three to five high school students that compete on the environmental subjects. Each team has approximately 25 minutes at each station where they work together to answer the questions asked by the natural resource professional. Each team is also responsible for a ten minute oral presentation about the current environmental issue.
The Area VII Envirothon is sponsored by the eleven county SE Minnesota Soil and Water Conservation Districts (Freeborn, Mower, Fillmore, Houston, Winona, Olmsted, Dodge, Rice, Wabasha, Goodhue and Steele.) The top three teams compete at the state level and then the top team at the state will compete at the national level.
The 2010 Area VII Envirothon was held at Chester Woods County Park near Rochester, Minnesota on Wednesday, May 5th. Teams from Rushford-Peterson Schools took first and second place honors.
Both Rushford-Peterson teams advanced to the state level competition which was held on Monday, May 17th at the Clearwater Forest Camp located near Brainerd. The area level first place team won the State Envirothon and will now advance to the Canon Envirothon which will be held in Fresno, California.
During the week of August 1-6th, the Rushford-Peterson state winning team competed at the Canon Envirothon at California State University in Fresno. Students from 45 states and nine Canadian provinces participated in the week long competition. Rushford-Peterson placed third and took home $15,000 in scholarships.
